Show the trailer to Castaway (superbly acted by Tom Hanks) to one half of the class while the other half is out of the room. Then show the trailer to 'I Am Legend' (whose main actor is Will Smith) to the other half of the class while the first half is out of the room.
Have these two groups separately discuss what is the basic synopsis of the trailers.
Then, have members pair up with members of the other group and have them take turns explaining what they think is the basic synopsis of the trailers.
Have a few volunteers give what they learned from the other group in front of the entire class.
After the two trailers have been discussed, show the two trailers again.
Any unclear notions should be less so and the teacher could lead a small discussion to make sure that the class knows the basic synopses of the trailers.
Give them one more discussion point (and this is the main one):
If you had a choice, whose situation would you rather be in? A lone survivor of a plane crash on a deserted island or the sole survivor of a world wide pandemic virus that infects the entire world?
Make sure the ramifications are discussed for both, highlighting issues like which situation has more hope?
