CATESOL – ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER & the TESOL CLUB OF CSU FULLERTON
S p r i n g 2 010 Professional Development Workshop
"How to Teach Language Skills and Increase Fluency Using Pop Music"
by Lori Cleary

Saturday, February 6, 2010 Titan Student Union, CSU Fullerton

Music can be an important asset in language acquisition. It allows students to practice the four skills, learn new vocabulary, and identify and practice important pronunciation patterns. It also creates an awareness of grammar structures, stimulates and develops critical thinking skills, and – as research has shown – is easier to remember than the same information presented in spoken form. Furthermore, music is relaxing, energizing, and exciting, and provides an avenue in which students become exposed to the local culture, values, and language. Most importantly, the teacher is using a text that the students can’t wait to study and understand. The goal of this interactive workshop is to provide hands-on experience using songs in the classroom to encourage language acquisition. Participants will learn how to develop vocabulary exercises to introduce new words and idioms, grammar practices to identify and practice key grammar structures, listening activities to increase comprehension skills, and pronunciation practice to identify English pronunciation patterns. Presented songs will apply to all teaching levels. Worksheets for each song will be provided. Lori Cleary is a noted expert on using the power of song to increase language acquisition and critical thinking skills. For 20 years, Cleary has trained teachers throughout the United States and abroad, and has presented extensively at TESOL and CATESOL conferences. Cleary has been a teacher trainer in the TESL programs at UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz and a teacher and director of courses at various colleges.
