Types of hooks:
1. Ask a question
2. Give a statistic: http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/ or www.refdesk.com
3. Tell a story: 1st person or 3rd?. True or Not True? Sources: Anecdotes http://www.liraz.com/Anecdote.htm or bookstores, brick/mortar & online. Learn from great storytellers.
4. Show a picture: google.com or clusty.com or flikr.com
5. Bring an object: Bring something real in.
6. Show a video: Google, YouTube, et. al. Use DVDs and other collections. Search iTunes ex. National Geographic or NBC Nightly News
7. Play a song, poem or lyric: Again: simple Google search.
8. Give a Quote: http://www.bartleby.com/quotations/ or http://www.quoteland.com/topic.asp
