If you have students active on twitter-now that's a big 'if', post a topic for them to quickly comment on: give a deadline for a response and let fly!
I have heard that one colleague of mine has done just this with success. He was able to glean from the students' tweets and develop a nice opening discussion for a future class. Since the students had already thought ahead because they tweeted, I would predict that the class discussion would be thoughtful and lively.
